Hi and welcome back, brave human!
How is your summer so far?
I’ve been binge-watching The Good Wife, any movie or series recs?
I just spent the entire last week at the Databricks conference, and I’m here to spill the tea.
Everyone is talking about AI and AI agents, and overall, this is the feeling about them.
They are easy to build but hard to evaluate. They still rely on subject matter experts to validate their output. So, if you have niche knowledge, I would monetize it as soon as possible.
I got to see the CEO of Anthropic talk, and it was eye-opening. He talked about how the models he is building are cool, but what makes them great is combining them with internal data and building tools is what is making waves.
Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, gave a masterclass on likability. He charmed the audience by talking slowly, speaking the lingo, and relating to the audience.
Cheers to you hacking your week,

Chat GPT is making you dumber. MIT's recent study separated 3 groups and assigned them to write an essay:
No Aid group
Google Search
A group of students relying on Chat GPT
They found that a group of students relying on Chat had less confidence in their learning and overall had less brain stimulation on their brain.
Inference models are giving the illusion of thinking. They gave regular LLMS (ones not designed for reasoning) and reasoning models the same tasks, and these were their findings.
For an easy task, regular LLMS outperformed inference models. The latter tend to overthink 😅😅😅😅
For a medium task, the reasoning outshone. They used their step-by-step “thinking” to solve problems better than regular models. This is where they look impressive, like a student carefully working through a problem.
For hard tasks: This is where the tea comes in. When puzzles got too complex, both regular and reasoning models failed completely. Even worse, the reasoning models stopped trying as hard as they used fewer “thinking steps” (or tokens, in AI terms) when the problem got tougher, almost like they gave up.
In conclusion, critical thinking is still a human task.
